Emulating a Professional Photographer

The most successful image:

I think this image is the most successful image due to the contrast between the table and the paper towel as well as the textural difference between the table and the paper towel.

The most challenging aspect of this assignment for me was finding a photographer to emulate that I could do at home without access to a car. As well as the fact that I had less time for this assignment over other assignments.

In the future it'd be best for me to take more time with the assignment, and in the future I would likely use my DSLR and equipment as opposed to a phone camera as for this assignment I had none of my equipment.

I really like the paper towel hanging that you took and I honestly find it way better looking than the professional photographer all because of the background and type of table that you used. I also like how you were able to capture the detail of the paper towel adding a nice and simple pattern that only compliments the picture.

I love how your photo on the left makes the paper feel almost touchable—its soft curve and tiny dimples really stand out against the dark table. When I compare it to the pro’s shot on the right, I feel it’s more personal and curious, like you’re discovering that simple form for the first time.

I think it would be even stronger if you boosted the contrast so the paper really pops off the wood, moved in closer or shot from a lower angle to turn that edge into a clear path for the eye, and used a wider aperture to blur any background distractions. I’d also experiment with a slightly cooler color cast to set a more dramatic mood.

I really liked your best image. I Initially was confused because I believed both photos were from the same person. I like the close up to detail on the paper towel. There is noticeable blur on the paper towel, but I don’t think it takes away from it’s similarity to the professional photo. I believe this photo successfully emulates the photographer you chose.

Hello! Knowing the context, I think you did the best you could do for this assignment! I agree that it is challenging to get the camera to focus to capture textures of both close-up and farther away objects. I have that same challenge! Additionally, I think using a professional camera is a good idea to work on your photography. IPhones are great, but professional cameras are definitely worth it to use to capture more details and perspectives! -Ashley Ridler
